Merry Christmas, RetroSkins family! Sorry about 2023 DC football (if you can call it that). Maybe Santa will double back and, uh, sleigh them all. In the meantime, we’ll keep you in the holiday spirit this week with a little something from the back of the shelf. It’s the season finale from 1995, the Carolina Panthers vs Washington Redskins played on Christmas Eve at beloved RFK Stadium. Although the end of the line for both ’95 teams, this one wasn’t without some historic significance. The Panthers were digging for a .500 finish, which would have been an NFL first for expansion teams. The Redskins, meanwhile, were looking to finish on the upswing, going for their third win in four games (and their first back-to-back wins in – sigh – three seasons). With plenty of Santas watching from the stands, RetroSkins fave Gus Frerotte and the Redskins avoided the naughty list with a solid win over a red-hot Panthers team (winners of 7 of their prior 10 games) in what would be the one and only Panthers visit to RFK. An eggnogged Jerry Glanville alongside the ever-patient Kevin Harlan, on the call from holiday-festooned RFK Stadium for the first-ever Redskins-Panthers match-up.
