What Are Giant Cave Cockroaches Good For? 5 Things You NEED to Know! | Intriguing Invertebrates

Giant Cave Cockroaches (Blaberus giganteus) may sound scary, yet they are anything but! They have an important role in rainforest ecosystems, beautiful wings, and an interesting defense mechanism... They go by many different types of common names, such as Brazilian cockroach and Central American giant cave cockroach, hence why scientist often use the funny sounding scientific name to distinguish! Like their common names suggest, the Giant Cave roach is native to Central America and northern South America. They love the rainforest habitat, as they need high moisture and little light. So they can often be found along to floor of caves! These cockroaches are not dangerous, although they have the same coloration as poisonous beetles. This is a defense mechanism to avoid being eaten! They also do something rather stinky... Cockroaches are good for many different reasons, and this species, like the Madagascan Hissing Cockroach, is a detritivore. They are certainly not pest, and really help keep things clean! They also hang around bats.... but why? Watch to find out!
