Meet the giant peppered cockroach (Archimandrita tessellata), one of the world's largest cockroaches! These interesting cockroaches come from Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama & Guatamala. They inhabit the forest floor, and need high humidity levels... two things to keep in mind if you decide to keep them as pets! The giant peppered cockroach may live longer than you expect, they can live for up to two years! In particular, the wings of the this cockroach are rather interesting... not only do they have a beautiful colouration (which is where they get their name "peppered") but they actually can't fly! But that's not all, watch to find out another fact about their wings... One of my favourite facts about cockroaches, is how helpful most species are to the environment because of what they eat: decaying plants and animal matter. This species, the giant peppered cockroach, is a detritivore. So they eat just that! In my colony, we feed them a variety of fruit and vegetables, and even leave a small amount of cat crunchies too! They are fed every other day, to prevent food getting moldy because of the humidity they need! With over 4,000 species of cockroaches around the world, there is so much still to learn about this important, but often misunderstood animals.
