The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 with its seven targets and four priorities for action, was adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on March 18, 2015. It was endorsed by the UN General Assembly on June 3, 2015. The Sendai Framework is a 15-year, voluntary, non-binding agreement that recognizes that the State has the primary role in reducing disaster risk but that responsibilities are to be shared with other stakeholders, including local government and the private sector. It aims for the following outcome: The substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries. At UNDRR, we believe there is no such thing as a natural disaster. A natural hazard, such as a hurricane, earthquake, or flood, only becomes a disaster when it impacts a community that is not adequately protected and whose population is vulnerable as a result of poverty, exclusion, or social disadvantage. We envision a world where disasters no longer threaten the well-being of people and the future of the planet. Sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda cannot be achieved without working towards the goal of building resilience.
