The scale of destruction caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami pushed the international community to develop the concept of ‘end-to-end, people-centered early’ warning systems. Its goal is to ensure that no one is left behind when disasters strike. This video highlights the four key elements ‘end-to-end, people-centered early’ warning systems: 1) Understanding risk; 2) Detection, monitoring, analysis, and forecasting; 3) Dissemination and communication, and 4) Preparedness and response capabilities. At UNDRR, we believe there is no such thing as a natural disaster. A natural hazard, such as a hurricane, earthquake, or flood, only becomes a disaster when it impacts a community that is not adequately protected and whose population is vulnerable as a result of poverty, exclusion, or social disadvantage. We envision a world where disasters no longer threaten the well-being of people and the future of the planet. Sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda cannot be achieved without working towards the goal of building resilience.
