Orderable Groups and Dynamics - Prof Kathryn Mann - The Archimedeans

Prof. Kathryn Mann is a topologist and geometric group theorist, who studies the groups of symmetries of spaces and surfaces. She has recently received many awards, including a Sloan Fellowship and the Birman Research Prize in Topology and Geometry. This talk will introduce you to some of Prof. Mann's favorite groups, which are not the ones you typically see in an algebra class. Rather, these are groups of transformations of spaces. In many cases, there is a beautiful relationship between the algebraic structure of the group and the dynamics or qualitative behavior of the ways it can transform a space. We'll explore a very special case of this: the relationship between an ordering on a group (an algebraic condition, which Prof. Mann will explain) and how this group can be realized by continuous functions on the real line.
