Digital Accessibility and Civil Rights - Lainey Feingold

Accessibility NYC Meetup - October 17 2023 TRANSCRIPT: https://isoc.live/a11ynyc/a11ynyc_oct... (TXT) https://archive.org/download/a11ynyc1... (PDF) "Digital Accessibility and Civil Rights: The 2023 legal landscape for the A11yNYC Community" offers an overview of what's happening in the United States digital accessibility legal space. It suggests ways we can all talk about the law, whatever our roles, without fear and restriction. There's a lot to talk about! New legislation in the US Congress and proposed (or soon-to-be-proposed) accessibility regulations on many topics. Beyond regulations, federal agencies have recently issued guidance about how existing laws require accessibility in Telehealth, Artificial Intelligence (AI) hiring tools, and #EdTech. And of course, there are lawsuits and Structured Negotiations. Whatever your role in digital accessibility, watch the video to "put the law in your pocket" as we build a digital world without exclusion, where disabled people are fully included. All of us working in digital accessibility are engaged in change management. Every day we are trying to change hearts and minds on the road to an inclusive digital world. The law can help! Digital accessibility is a legal issue because accessibility is a civil right of disabled people. In the United States, though, the law is often spoken of with fear, as something unrelated to actual people who are (and want to be!) creators and consumers of digital tech and content. This talk: * Offers a brief overview of what is happening in the United States legal space. * Suggests language and tools for talking about the law whatever your role is (or you want it to be) in the digital accessibility ecosystem. * Includes questions from the live audience. PRESENTER Lainey Feingold is a disability rights lawyer, author, and international speaker who has worked in the digital accessibility space since 1995. She helped negotiate the first web accessibility agreement in the United States in 2000 and has worked with dozens of companies and public sector organizations on accessibility initiatives since then. Lainey is the author of Structured Negotiation: A Winning Alternative to Lawsuits (2d Edition 2021). She was named a Legal Rebel and Problem Solver of the Year by the American Bar Association in 2017 and twice received a California Lawyer Magazine Attorney of the Year Award. Lainey serves on the Board of Teach Access, a nonprofit collaborating with education, industry, and disability advocacy organizations to bridge the accessibility skills gap.
