Saving Louisiana’s Coast with Recycled Oyster Shells

Since 2014, The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) has recycled over 9 million lbs of oyster shells from New Orleans-area restaurants. Instead of letting this valuable resource waste in a landfill, CRCL’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program is using the shell to restore oyster reefs that protect Louisiana’s eroding coastline and create habitat for more oysters. In this Local Motives episode, we sit down with CRCL’s Restoration Programs Director, enjoy some oysters at a local restaurant, and get busy bagging shells as volunteers. We hope you enjoy it! And remember, once you shuck ‘em, don’t just chuck ‘em! (This video was filmed in 2019.)
