Having found the Whirlwind computer in an MIT course, he switched his study to the application of digital computers. Heart moved to MIT's Lincoln Laboratory when the SAGE project moved there. When the SAGE system moved to MITRE, Heart stayed at Lincoln Lab working on the digital computer and interface aspects of communications and radar pointing systems. In 1966 he was recruited to Bolt Beranek and Newman to be involved in computer applications in health care but soon came to lead BBN's ARPANET IMP development effort.
