Retriever Training Alone: Wagon Wheel Casting Drill

Wagon Wheel Casting Drill PURPOSE - To tighten up casting when a dog isn’t taking the correct cast (ie. dig-backs, scallops, overcasting). SETUP - Eight white bumpers a laid out in the standard 1 tier wagon wheel pattern with a radius of approximately 10 yards. The dog is placed (sitting) in the middle of the wheel with his back to one of the bumpers. The trainer is standing a few feet outside the wheel, facing the dog. STRATEGY - This is a low pressure drill that uses attrition, not corrections. The order of the casts depends on the trainer's preference. Some prefer an opposite cast approach ie. right angle back, then left angle back. Others prefer to teach the casts in pairs ie. straight left back, angle left back, straight left back. Both silent and vocal casts can be used.
