Retriever Training Alone: ABC Drill

PURPOSE - To improve a dog's focus and teach a dog to run marks with lines that are tight to a gunner. SETUP - 4 or 5 stickmen (or gunners in white jackets) are placed in the field - distances range from 30 to 175 yards. STRATEGY - The fall area of each throw is designed to teach a dog a specific concept. eg, tight behind the gunner, checkdown, under the arch, pick up pheasant after duck, etc. In order to best teach the concept, there is usually a specific order that the 4 or 5 marks should be thrown. All marks are run as singles. This is a good maintenance drill - some trainers run it as often as once a week. D.L.
