Glow Worm Tunnel Upgraded - Newnes Plateau - Lithgow - 4K

This is by far one of the easiest places to visit to see glow worms and one of the easiest and most popular walks out on the Newnes Plateau. NSW National Parks have just spent a whopping 4.1 million dollars to develop and upgrade this location. Upgrades include a new car park (way too small), toilets and massively upgraded walking track both to and inside the old railway tunnel making this an easy walk for any age. Sadly, it is not wheelchair friendly. For most people, at a leisurely pace, this is a 2km, 1-hour return walk. To enter the tunnel, you will need a torch. Please, glow worms do not like bright lights or loud noises, so, keep your lights towards the ground and all noise down low. Take your time, stop, hang onto the new handrail and look up, let your eyes adjust and take in the wonderment of the glow worm colony here. The best time to see more glow worms is in summer, though, there are still plenty in the cooler months. Warning: The car park will fill up very quickly, so if you are not here early, you may not be able to park, when we visited, the car park was empty upon arrival, but on leaving, was full, with cars parked on the side of the road for a KM, and we counted at least another 40 vehicles heading down towards the car park. The glow worm colony has taken up residence inside one of the old railway tunnels on the old Newnes railway route. The tunnel was completed in 1907 and is around 400mtrs long. The railway closed in 1932. Due to the length and curve of the tunnel, it is pitch black inside. Glow worms are the bioluminescent larvae of Arachnocampa richardsae, a type of fungus gnat. The road to get here from Lithgow can be very slippery and bumpy, particularly after rain. Please drive to the conditions.
