The Lilliputters Guild Summer Tour 2022 – Day 5

00:00 - Llancarfan 03:39 - Penmark 07:09 - Porthkerry Friday dawned bright and sunny, as we headed out for our second half-day of the week - an extraordinarily light and generous itinerary by our standards! The order of the day was three sixes, before a free afternoon on Barry Island. The arrival of William also bolstered our numbers again. :-) Up first were the sweet, light, modern ring at Llancarfan, which were cast by Whitechapel and hung by Nicholson in 1998. As expected, they handle nicely and sound pretty, although the ropes are extremely long and the front bells a touch flighty. The church also contains some wonderful wall-paintings; unfortunately, I barely got to see these, as I spent most of my time in the ringing room, either standing or hovering! Amongst the ringing brought round here, one of our party-pieces, a course of Bourne, is featured in the video, alongside some of the lower (filmed outside in my one break for freedom). https://dove.cccbr.org.uk/detail.php?... Next up were the rather more colourful bells of Penmark - you know you're in for a treat when the local warns you about them! Pleasingly, the bells went "Rudhall, Carr, Rudhall, Carr, Rudhall, Carr"! This was, arguably, where the pleasure ended; after ascending the steep ladder to the ringing gallery, we found - to our amusement, during the raise - a ring of bells with some rather "quirky" tuning, a horrendously oddstruck 4th, and some back bells which required rather a lot of pulling. Our good run of form this week continued here, when the tenor slip-wheeled within eight changes of the first touch, Bob Minor! Luckily, nothing was broken, and Lewis and Ashley were on hand to quickly reunite rope and wheel, allowing us to continue with no further mishaps. The repertoire here was kept simple; that said, there is a lot of satisfaction to be had from ringing a tricky peal of bells well, and we certainly managed that here. As well as the imaginative touch of Bob Doubles on display, Andrew's less-imaginative short-course of Grandsire was brightened with a few (well, two) YARPs. https://dove.cccbr.org.uk/detail.php?... Our final tower of the morning was Porthkerry, a beautiful little church whose setting belies the airport just behind it! Sadly, these bells, a real hotchpotch of founders and years, were more of a resemblance to the airport, being less-than-tuneful, and not easy to strike. They did handle well enough however, although the treble was very light, and so we were able to resume our Surprise Minor focus, including some Spliced and a very respectable course of Annable's London. Included for your delectation here are some call changes (inside), and Cambridge Minor (outside). https://dove.cccbr.org.uk/detail.php?... After a convivial Hungry Horse lunch, we headed out for our well-earned free afternoon on Barry Island. Whilst the planned treasure hunt did not materialise, this seemed to suit everyone better, as some Members stuck around for a leisurely walk on Barry Beach, others ventured out to Llantwit Major to amuse The Goodest Boy, and others still headed back to base early to start on our evening meal, pizzas. With everyone arriving back at Miskin Mill in good time, many of us snuck out under Jose's nose for a cheeky pre-dinner pint - be impressed that it took till Day Five to introduce ourselves to the local pub!! Après food, it was time for the traditional Talen (sic) Show, which, this year, was won by William's imaginative and well-executed No-Act Act. Up Next.... well, we haven't seen the Rainbow Tops yet this week, have we? Nor have we had a 12-bell tower.... oh and maybe there'll be another special visitor to feature. I'm saying nothing.... oops! Keep your eyes "pealed" for the next installment! :-)
