Chateau Belgrave 2014 Premium Bordeaux (Haut Medoc) Wine Review

Chateau Belgrave is a 5th growth under the 1855 Classification System. The winery was originally called Chateau Countenceau but renamed Chateau Belgrave by an owner in the 19th century (Bruno Devies) because of its gravel terroir (belle or "beautiful" and grave for the grave soils) The winery is west of Chateau Beychevelle and Chateau Lagrange and very close to the St. Julien border. The winery is managed by Dourthe Bordeaux, who is owned by large negociant CVGB. Dourthe has a contract to manage Belgrave until 2025. The winery underwent major renovations occurred in 1993 and 2004. Vinified in 33 stainless steel tanks and 6 oak vats. 40-60% new French oak barrels. Michel Rolland is consultant The vineyard is 59 hectares in size and planted with 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. The winery is slowly phasing out their Cabernet Franc. They make about 20,000 cases a year. The 2014 vintage is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot and 17,000 cases were made.
