Cos D’Estournel 2006 St. Estephe Trophy Bordeaux Wine Review

Cos D'Estournel is a 2nd growth wine in the 1855 Classification System from the St. Estephe region Cos means in old Gascon speech means "the hill of pebbles". Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, gave his name to the estate after founding in 1811. Originally Cos was not sold through negociant system but directly to customers. Much of it was sold to India, which inspired the Indian design of the label. Prior to 1855, the winery was sold to the Charmolue family who also owned Chateau Montrose at that time. In 1917, they sold the estate until 1917 Fernand Ginestet, who passed on the estate to his descendents, Jean-Marie Prats, Yves Prats and Bruno Prats. Then Cos was sold to the Merlaut family, owners of the Taillan Group in 1998 and then resod again in 2000 to Michel Reybier. The cellars of Cos d’Estournel are entirely operated by gravity. There are no pumps of any kind to force the wine. Supposedly, this allows for the expression of its special terroir. Cos has 84 isothermal, cone-shaped, stainless steel vats, which allow for more precise, plot-by-plot vinification. Starting with the 2015 vintage, the age barrel aging regimen was changed. Today, Chateau Cos d’Estournel is aged in an average of 50% to 60% New French oak barrels for about 18 months before bottling. The winery consists of 100 hectares and is planted to 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Cos d’Estournel became fully organic in 2024. Because the fruit is grown close to the Atlantic ocean in a cool climate, Cos d’Estournel is often among the last of the properties in the Medoc to harvest. The 2006 vintage was a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot For more information about the winery, please visit their website at https://www.estournel.com/en/
