After sailing down British Columbia's Inside Passage, I arrived on the north shore of Vancouver Island, to the small town of Port Hardy. This diminutive village is where the Island Highway ends (or begins, depending on your perspective), winding its way down from here for almost 500 km to the capital city of Victoria. What you will NOT find here is an adorable town, but a forgettable town that is surrounded by some of the finest natural beauty and most stunning coastlines that Western Canada has to offer (but it's still worth stopping at Cafe Guido for a warm beverage, while you're in the area). Strolling along its moss-covered waterfront is one of the finest experiences you'll enjoy on your British Columbia road trip. Finish your day with some of the most amazing fish & chips in Canada, which you'll find at the Glen Lyon Inn, just outside of town -- a reminder to not judge a book by its cover.
