Episode 12 : White Lady, No Jumbo, Cold Skeleton

We move from our overnight camp at one mountain to a bit of glamping at another, then on to one of Namibias favourite fishing destinations, the remote and fairly desolate Terrace Bay on the Skeleton Coast. Our first move is from the Spitzkoppe to the Brandberg and Brandberg White Lady Lodge. The Brandberg is a serious lump of rock some 2,500m high. There are known to be desert elephants in this area, regarded as the largest in Africa, and maybe some rhino so we are hopeful to see something. We haven't seen much wildlife in a while in these very harsh areas. The elephants are nomadic and they may or may not be in this area while we are here. As noted in the video, when you check into the White Lady lodge they ask you to leave any fruit you might have with them for storage. If there are elephants about they may smell the fruit in your car and they are not fussy what they have to do to get at it. You can't leave it in the you fridge, they can still smell it. You also get an information sheet about how to deal with any elephants you come across in the camp. They may check out your camp site or car if they are in the mood. Telling them to go away does not work and getting close to them for a selfie is also considered to be unwise. Then on to the Skeleton Coast and Terrace Bay. I could not resist a look at this desolate area and Terrace Bay especially. It's a favourite fishing location in southern Africa for Kob (Mulloway) off the beach. There is accomodation here but its pretty basic. Its windswept and battered by the elements. I'd class it as the second most desolate coastal acommodation in Namibia. The one that tops the list for me is in the next video. Terrace Bay is the furthest north you can get along the coast unless you get a permit to go the extra 80km up to Mowe Bay. There is even less there apart from a very high cost resort where you can commune with the Namib Desert. The road to Terrace Bay is unpaved but OK but the road to Mowe Bay is evidently a track. Maybe I should have got the permit just to do it as a day trip. Too late now. I'm amazed (again/still) at how cold it is at Terrace Bay. The ocean is still in the grip of the Benguela current and the cold water overrides the fact that you are well into the tropics. I had no idea that the effect of ocean temperature could be so radical. This is our last stop on the coast. We have to return back through the eastern park gate to head up further north where we'll eventually end up at the border with Angola. Then we'll head east and then south back to Windhoek. Do we ever find some elephants?
