In this episode we leave the Skeleton Coast and head back inland to Desert Elephant Camp. We had originally intended to stay at the nearby Mowani Camp but it was full and they put us in at Desert Elephant. And does it live up to it's name? Spoiler Alert! No. Still no elephants. Well they are wild animals and have busy schedules so we just have to be around when they are around and we are not. Desert Elephant Camp is similar to Spitzkoppe but not quite as basic. More comfortable with better facilities. It's still under construction. They two guys that manage the camp are also building a Lapa and Bar so by now in 2024 it would be a little more luxurious. They also said that the plywood doors on the showers etc were makeshift for the moment and likely to be upgraded. There were some deluxe lodges in this area complete with deluxe prices. Its nice on occasions but not this time. It's a one nighter at Desert Elephant then off up the road to our next camp, Khowarib. Its a combined lodge and campsite on the banks (literally) of the Hoanib River. It turns out to be wonderful and a bit weird. We have a full day here just chilling. Due to the surrounding mountains there is no mobile coverage and the lodge part has no internet or wifi. Love it. On the way up we have noticed that not only is the landscape changing again but we are seeing way more people and it is more what you expect Africa to be like. Southern Namibian towns can be quite european and the countryside that is not national park or game reserve is often farms. Here we see a lot of people herding goats and just going about their business. At a small settlement called Palmwag we had to stop for a quarantine inspection and saw quite a few traditionally dressed Himba and Heroro people. We have seen some Himba people before but not Heroro. I think that will change as we head further north.
