Project "ppengine" - a modern HD remake of the Pole Position arcade game by Atari/Namco

This is a video of a project I'm currently working on - a remake of Atari/Namco's "Pole Position" arcade game from 1983. The name of this project is currently "ppengine", hopefully to become something a bit more catchy before any kind of public release. I'm looking to do a binary release on Linux, Windows and maybe Mac platforms in Q1 2014, with a source code release to follow later in the year. This is all assuming that I don't receive any unpleasant correspondence from Atari or Namco in the meantime! It's my second attempt at a remake of this particular game - the first being "Grid Leader" which is also featured on Youtube. Whilst Grid Leader was generally well received for its graphical style, I always felt that the gameplay failed to capture the "feel" or "spirit" of the original arcade game. I therefore went back to the drawing board at the beginning of 2013 and started work on "Project ppengine". The flagship feature of ppengine is that the game mechanics (i.e. the race timing, acceleration/speed/handling of the player car, the opponent car AI and so on) are derived by means of reverse engineering these mechanics within the original Z8002 arcade ROMs. This addresses my main issue with the original "Grid Leader" remake - ppengine is much more successful at capturing the "spirit" and "feel" of the original arcade game - because it is the original arcade game, but with nice HD graphics. The game mechanics of Grid Leader were based upon observation of gameplay and were therefore somewhat inferior in comparison. Due to the modular way in which ppengine has been developed, the code could also potentially facilitate accurate conversions of Pole Position to platforms that have never seen a conversion. I'm particularly interested in seeing Pole Position on the Atari ST/Falcon and Amiga and might well pursue this in the future. I've retained the graphical style of Grid Leader for the most, simply because I liked it personally and don't have the 3D modelling skills to go beyond what's present. Having said this, I'd love for somebody to pick the project up following the source release and overhaul the graphical style by adding dense track scenery, weather effects and anything else you might expect to see in a 2014 era racer. Some technical details for those that are interested: - Development language: C/C++ - Development environment: Ubuntu 13.10, gcc compiler, vim editor - Support libraries: Open Scene Graph (http://www.openscenegraph.org), Gorilla Audio (http://code.google.com/p/gorilla-audio/) - 3D modeller: Blender (using osgexport to export models to OSG format) - Image manipulation: GIMP - Reverse enginnering support tools: MAME, GNU bintools, Z8000 technical manual, PHP Feel free to fire any questions or comments over - I'm passionate about this project and would welcome the opportunity to discuss with others with a similar level of interest!
