Mountain goats, Oreamnos americanus, are native to the northern Rocky Mountains. The mountain goat inhabits the Rocky Mountains and Cascade Range and other mountain regions of North America, from Washington, Idaho and Montana through British Columbia and Alberta, into the southern Yukon and southeastern Alaska. Its northernmost range is said to be along the northern fringe of the Chugach Mountains in southcentral Alaska. Introduced populations can also be found in such areas as Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, South Dakota, and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. Rocky Mountain Goats || Mountain Goats || Oreamnos americanus is a hoofed mammal endemic to North America. A subalpine to alpine species, it is a sure-footed climber commonly seen on cliffs and ice. Despite its vernacular name and both genera being in the same subfamily (Caprinae), the mountain goat is not a member of Capra, the genus that includes all other goats, such as the wild goat, Capra aegagrus, from which the domestic goat is derived. The mountain goat is an even-toed ungulate of the order Artiodactyla and the family Bovidae that includes antelopes, gazelles, and cattle. It belongs to the subfamily Caprinae, along with true goats, wild sheep, the chamois, the muskox and other species. Both male and female mountain goats have beards, short tails, and long black horns, 15–28 cm (5.9–11 in) in length, which contain yearly growth rings. They are protected from the elements by their woolly white double coats. The fine, dense wool of their undercoats is covered by an outer layer of longer, hollow hairs. Mountain goats are the largest mammals found in their high-altitude habitats, which can exceed elevations of 13,000 ft (4,000 m). FUN FACTS: A. A mountain goat can climb more than 450 vertical meters (1,500 feet) in 20 minutes — that’s higher than the Empire State Building! B. Mountain goats are actually not goats. They are in the bovidae family, which includes antelopes, gazelles and cattle. C. You can tell the age of a mountain goat by counting the rings on their horns. D. The lifespan of mountain goat is about 12 to 15 years in the wild and up to 16 to 20 years in captivity. E. Gestation is about 150 - 180 days and 1 - 3 kids are born in May to June. The young are mobile shortly after birth. The young are weaned after 3 - 4 months and stay with the mother until she gives birth the following year.    • Red Dogs (baby bison) Compilation | Y...      • Wildlife | Babies of Yellowstone 🐻   Timestamps: 1.
