Lawns are going to start to green up and look really, really good, but at our office this time of year, we’ll get a lot of people who will call in and they’ll say, “you know what, my lawn is browning up,” or “it’s looking really matted down. Is there something that is going on?” So, we see a couple of different things that can cause this. One is a condition called snow mold. The two different types of snow mold we deal with in Utah are called pink snow mold and gray snow mold. This is a characteristic of what we will see with snow mold. Now, in the pictures that you’re looking at, you can see that they can get a grayish kind of webbing into it. So, some people will think, “is it a spider, or is there something else that is going on?” But, what generally causes this to happen is that when we have so much snow that is on the ground, it prevents oxygen getting down towards the grass blades to help burn off the mold that can get onto it—the fungus strains that we deal with. The question that we’ll always get is, “what should I do about it; how can I make it so that my lawn looks better?” So, the best thing that you can do is take a leaf rake and fluff up the grass. Some folks will ask, “can I just mow my lawn and help it out?” The problem with that is that a lot of the time, the blade will not pick up the grass blades enough to cut that fungus out, so if you fluff it up with a rake really quickly, it will help to get those spores to break up and also to get away with the wind and the different things to disperse it that way. And when you do that first mowing of the year, you can help to minimize that from spreading. The other thing that you want to consider doing is in the fall to do a shorter mowing on your lawn, so if your grass blades stay up higher and then we have heavy, heavy snow, it’s going to push those grass blades down, and it’s going to create an area that this mold can just thrive in and just continue to fester until we get into the spring. And then, depending on the temperatures—sometimes we’ll have colder soil; sometimes it will warm up—all those things can affect whether or not this snow mold can really affect the lawn. Now, it’s generally not going to harm the lawn, but you still want to fluff up, and you’ll want to get it out. So, thanks so much for watching.
