I'm a lawn specialist at Stewart's, and today we're going to talk about overseeding and aeration. If you want a stronger, healthier lawn that lives longer and looks better in the long term, you should aerate your lawn every year. Annual aeration dramatically improves the soil and the root system that supports your lawn. People don’t always understand why aeration needs to be done and what happens when it’s not. Aerating helps remove excess thatch, relieves compacted soil, stimulates healthy new root development, adds organic material to the clay soil, and sends oxygen to the root zone. If you choose not to aerate, your lawn will eventually develop a thick layer of thatch, and the soil beneath will likely become compacted. When this happens, water tends to bog down around the roots, creating swamp-like soil conditions. Over time, the lawn can get so bad that if you were to take a shovel and dig up part of the grass, you would smell a strong, swampy odor. This is terrible for grass because it’s a breeding ground for diseases like necrotic ring spot. And right now in Utah, we have an epidemic of necrotic ring spot disease. At this point, I would say as much as 20–30 percent of all lawns in Utah have some type of necrotic ring disease. One of the main treatments for necrotic ring is to aerate the lawn to allow it to breathe and to help dry out the swampy soil. One problem, though, is that you can spread necrotic ring and other diseases through aeration. When you aerate, it pulls a plug out of the soil, so you could accidentally take part of that plug to another lawn, mix it into the soil there, and spread the disease. I’m sure that one of the reasons why we have such a problem with necrotic ring spreading so quickly across the state is because dirty aerators have been spreading the disease. At Stewarts, we use a sanitized aerator to do the treatment. Each of our trucks has a power washer that’s connected to a tank with a disinfectant in it. We always use this to power wash and disinfect the aerator completely before it goes to your property. Then, we perform the aeration, and before we leave, we power wash and disinfect the aerator again before we put it back on the truck and go to the next property. We make an extra effort to deep clean our aerators because we also treat for necrotic ring, so it’s important to us to have a machine that doesn’t spread the disease and make it worse. After aerating your lawn, it’s a good idea to overseed. Lawns do get old, and as a lawn gets older, it reproduces and fills in at a slower rate. Overseeding adds fresh young grass to your existing turf, so it’s a great way to help keep your lawn younger and healthier. It also adds extra years to the beauty of your lawn. So, you can call or text our office during our business hours and we'd be happy to give you more information or give you a free estimate.
