Talk presented on 24 October 2023 by Dr Marijn Nijenhuis, University of Twente - Invited Professor at Instant-Lab, Institute of Mechanical Engineering, EPFL - within the MechE Colloquium series. Complete title: High-precision mechatronics: flexures for fast and fretting-free functioning. Abstract: Flexure-based joints offer advantages in creating motion platforms with high repeatability. By harnessing the properties of elastic deformation, these joints operate with minimal hysteresis and zero play. This intentional design for repeatability means that computer models with good predictive value can be constructed for the design optimisation and control of these systems. During this presentation, I'll delve into how we integrate flexures with hexapod manipulation systems. The aim is to design systems that not only operate with high repeatability and speed but also sidestep the typical wear often seen in high-speed mechanisms. Biography: Marijn Nijenhuis is an Assistant Professor at the Chair of Precision Engineering of the University of Twente in the Netherlands. He works on developing efficient modelling techniques to better understand the multi-domain interactions in complex mechatronics systems. He has a background in flexure mechanisms for large range of motion applications, specialising in simulations for the design optimisation and motion control of elastically deforming systems.
