Wistful Wild ~ Pikmin 2 Cover

This song's about as disorienting and wacky as the Pikmin series itself is! How fitting. I admittedly have not played Pikmin 2, though I have thoroughly enjoyed the first entry in the series, as well as Pikmin 4. I like to have my gameplay under my control at all times, and Pikmin is a series that does not always grant players that luxury. Even when sending my Pikmin to complete a basic task, I can't guarantee that they will do so without finding themselves lost, unable to make progress, or worse, in the clutches of an unnerving creature. This piece of music, serving as the theme for Pikmin 2's final area, represents the dangers and uncertainty of this series very well. I've been wanting to experiment more with unique and deliberate sounds lately. This track and, frankly, most tracks from the Pikmin series, could serve as a great opportunity for sound experimentation, so I went for it. The strange, flute-esque harmonized leads of the original piece I thought would fit nicely when played on an actual flute and put under some effects. I added some chorus to both flute tracks, and pitched one down an octave to make it sound more like a bass flute (an instrument I really would love to have in my arsenal). I also used this cover as an excuse to bust out two of my lesser used wind instruments, the melodica and accordion. The latter simply doubles the flute parts in the first loop of the piece, while the former replaces what was originally a high-pitched, bendy, and very distant sounding stringed instrument. I don't know what made me choose the melodica for this part, but it worked so well, I believe. As for the actual progression of the piece, I had it flow through the various different states the track can take in-game based on whether or not the player is in combat or nearing death (I think those are the specific conditions for each respective phase of the piece, at least. Again, I haven't actually played the game). The first loop brings a hefty and rhythmic low piano part, as well as a really fun new rhythm for the bass and the aforementioned accordion parts. I figured a flute solo would work here as well, and I made a decision to not be afraid to play outside of the key here and there, something I've never quite been able to do tastefully. With a song that radiates unease like this one though, I figured I couldn't really go wrong even if I tried, and I like how the solo turned out. I added a lot of chorus to the solo as well, to give the flute an unnatural feel. The final part of the cover brings in a synth, meant to mimic an alarm of danger as the player's situation grows more dire. Ultimately, all fades save for the lead instruments and the piano and guitar's rhythmic line that persists through the entire song. I thought it was really fun letting this cover progress in whichever way felt most natural. I even added in some less noticeable tracks in hindsight that weren't written out, as my vision for the final product grew. Thank you all, as always, for listening! I'd love to cover some more of Pikmin's wonderfully unique music in the future, but for now, I'm shifting my focus to a track from an iconic series of Nintendo's that, seemingly against all odds, is making a comeback in just a few short months!
