Introduction to Geospatial Energy Planning

The World Bank’s Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT Program, approved in November 2023 with an overall financing envelope of US$5 billion, is designed to accelerate sustainable and clean energy access affecting 100 million people in more than 20 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Digital technologies can significantly accelerate progress towards energy access and climate action by improving the efficiency, transparency, and sustainability whilst reducing the transaction time and costs associated with energy access and carbon finance programs. Significant opportunities exist to advance the digitalization and integration of data streams in every country in the Eastern & Southern Africa region. Digitization potential encompasses the full project life-cycle: from planning stage through geospatial analytics and spatial data infrastructure, at the procurement and implementation stages of publicly funded initiatives, through the incorporation of process management systems, and at the implementation stage by utilizing digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) to assess on-the-ground asset performance and establish feedback loops that can inform future policies and programs. These three application areas, namely (1) geospatially-informed planning, (2) tender and contract management, and (3) MRV, have been identified as key areas under ASCENT to support countries with the opportunity to harmonize and align practices at the regional level and promote greater efficiencies across the region. The upcoming webinar series will delve deeply into essential aspects of creating a digitalized ecosystem for energy access. Over the next few months, it will cover the practical implementation of this ecosystem, present relevant digital tools and approaches, highlight their value propositions, and outline critical steps for their adoption. Two webinars are planned to kick-start this series. Session outline 3:00 to 3:05 pm Opening 3:05 to 3:20 pm What is Geospatially Informed Energy Planning (GIEP) A high-level overview of GIEP, and why it is relevant for Energy Officials. 3:20 to 3:50 pm Geospatial planning in Kenya How GIEP helped Kenya become an Access Champion. 3:50 to 4:10 pm The Global Electrification Platform (GEP) The latest GEP results, associated training and other resources available to Energy Planners. 4:10 to 4:30 pm Q&A. #comesa #geospatialtechnology #geospatial #geospatialplanning #ascent #digitaltransformation #digitalization #worldbank
