Introduction to Carbon Markets

The World Bank’s Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) Program, approved in 2023 with a financing envelope of US$5 billion, is designed to accelerate sustainable and clean energy access affecting 100 million people in up to 20 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Following the webinar, ASCENT focal points of each country will participate in this year’s Innovate for Climate (I4C) conference between September 10-12 in Berlin. Hosted by the World Bank Group, I4C is an annual global conference and its flagship event on carbon markets (and carbon pricing) that will enable participants build on the foundation gained through the webinar and gain insights on key development, trends, challenges, and opportunities in carbon markets globally. This year, the I4C will be followed by a dedicated "ASCENT Carbon Day" for ASCENT country focal points and key stakeholders that will offer a deep dive into the areas relevant for operationalizing and delivering carbon assets under the program with insights from practitioners and market players active in the area.
