Join us for Matchday 41 as we revisit Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium after our disappointing visit in February, when the game against Bolton was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. Determined to complete this stadium visit, we returned during the summer to avoid any weather issues. This time, we caught a pre-season friendly with West Bromwich Albion, a team Grandad Steve supports, making it an even more special occasion. Our journey from the Midlands to Cambridge took about 2.5 hours, impressive given the rush hour traffic. Parking was a challenge, but we eventually found a spot on a side street, just a short 10-minute walk from the stadium. The weather was perfect for a day out in shorts and t-shirts. Before the game, we met with Dave, Cambridge United's Supporter Liaison Officer, who had reached out to us after our previous visit. Dave was fantastic, providing Liam with the team squads and inviting us to meet him after the match for a special tour. The game itself was lively, with West Brom's U23 team putting up a good fight. A contentious penalty gave Cambridge the lead, and despite both teams' efforts, the match ended 1-0 to Cambridge. Post-game, Dave gave us an insightful tour of the stadium, highlighting the club's family-friendly initiatives and future plans. We wrapped up our visit with some memorable photos and experiences, thanks to Dave's hospitality. Despite a late-night journey home with some detours, it was a fulfilling trip.
