Fluid Mechanics Lesson 14B: Aerodynamic Drag on Various Objects

Fluid Mechanics Lesson Series - Lesson 14B: Aerodynamic Drag on Various Objects. In this 8-minute video, Professor Cimbala shows tables of drag coefficients for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects (geometric shapes, parachutes, bicycles, trees, etc.). In the process he explains how streamlining can greatly reduce the drag coefficient. He does a detailed example of how to estimate the drag area of a bicycle/rider combination by coasting down a hill. He then shows how the calculated drag area can be used to predict the power which the rider must apply to the pedals in order to travel at constant speed on a level road. This video incorporates material from Sections 11-3 and 11-4 of the Fluid Mechanics textbook by Cengel and Cimbala, Edition 4.
