Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Engineering Lesson Series - Lesson 14A: Sphere Drag and Drag Coefficient In this 18-minute video, Professor John Cimbala describes the various regimes of flow over a sphere, which depend on Reynolds number (Re): For Re much smaller than one, Stokes flow is a good approximation because viscous effects dominate, but for larger Reynolds numbers, inertial effects become important and the Stokes approximation is not valid. Dr. Cimbala shows several piecewise equations for drag coefficient (CD) as a function of Re, and then recommends the Morrison equation for all Reynolds numbers below one million.
