I think of Distillerie Carbet Neisson on the west coast of Martinique as being up there with some of the best spirit producers in the world. It is to my shame, therefore, that I haven't reviewed anything of theirs in about a year and a half (see • Neisson Rhum Agricole Blanc review for my review of their standard 50% ABV Agricole Blanc from last June). This video hopefully provides some correction for that, in the form of my hyping up two more unaged Neisson offerings: the intriguing Organic (certified as organically grown, as the label says, and the first Martiniquan rum to achieve that certification) and the cartoonishly strong flagship offering, L'Esprit. Stats: Neisson Organic Rum (Thieubert-Carbet, Martinique; bottled circa 2020; 52.5% ABV), 87/100 Rhum Neisson L'Esprit Agricole Blanc (Thieubert-Carbet, Martinique; lot 18/267; 70% ABV), 90+/100 When spirits nerds (no matter the category) pound the table and curse the age of wood engineering and hold court about making spirit that shows great character right off the still - smaller-scale production, wild varietals as source material, natural yeast, longer fermentations, etc. - this is the kind of stuff they're on about. The L'Esprit is a total stunner, as good as any rhum agricole that I've ever had. Meanwhile, even if I'm not as crazy about the Organic, I admire it hugely... and, although I don't think I mention it in the video, I'm pretty sure it'll age magnificently. Well done, Neisson!
