LMDW Artist #13 (Bowmore '01, Glen Garioch '88, Glenburgie '95, Ardmore '09, Tamdhu '06) + a Grappa

In last week's video I was rather floored (again, because it's happened before) by the quality of the grappas coming out of Marolo in Piemonte (   • 4 Old Grappas: Marolo Barolo 1985 & 1...   ). I even went so far as to mention there that I thought one might easily mistake one of the old Marolos for a thirty or forty year old Scottish malt whisky. And today, as I was talking my wife into helping me set up a blind, I realized I could actually test out that theory. So what we've got here today is a blind tasting, mainly featuring five malts from the 13th iteration of the La Maison du Whisky Artist Series. That would be a rather beloved line that hearkens back to the heyday of Italian IBs (think early Samaroli), notably by pairing whiskies up with artists - in this case Washington-born Iris Scott. (N.b, you can shop some of her prints at https://prints.irisscottfineart.com/c... since I can't show off the bottles.) There's a fun mix of stuff here: some peaters, some very old Speysiders and Highlanders, and some good old fashioned sherry bombs, and I'm tasting and evaluating them without knowing what's what. And just to make things interesting, and to test my intuition from last week, hidden in the six glasses somewhere is that Marolo '87 I enjoyed so much. Here's what was up: Glass 1: Ardmore 2009 13 Year Old Highlands Single Malt Scotch Whisky (ex-bourbon, bottled circa 2023; 208 bottles; 56.8% ABV) 86-/100 Glass 2: Glen Garioch 1988 34 Year Old Highlands Single Malt Scotch Whisky (hogshead, bottled circa 2023; 146 bottles; 45.8% ABV), 86+/100 Glass 3: Glenburgie 1995 28 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (hogshead, bottled circa 2023; 186 bottles; 57% ABV), 90/100 Glass 4: Bowmore 2001 21 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (refill casks, bottled circa 2023; 103 bottles; 56.1% ABV), 89-/100 Glass 5: Marolo Grappa di Barolo 1987 27 Year Old, Barrel 1208 (Distilleria Santa Teresa, Alba; 50% ABV), 89/100 Glass 6: Tamdhu 2006 16 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (sherry cask, bottled circa 2023; 271 bottles; 60.6% ABV), 88/100 I really like all of these distilleries, and so I (unsurprisingly) like these bottles. I did mix up the Glen Garioch and the Glenburgie, but otherwise managed not to embarrass myself too much. This is, incidentally, the best Glenburgie I've ever tasted, ashy and austere but with a development to die for and even something I could have sworn was peat; the Glen Garioch, from one of my absolute favorite Scotch distilleries (see    • Deanston 12 v. Arran 10 v. Glen Gario...   ), was soft and understated and beautiful and almost textbook Highlands/Speyside, to the point where I kept thinking it was the Marolo interloper. The others, the ones I got right? The Tamdhu is a classic sherry bomb, grungy but not quite as grungy as the OB Batch Strength that I had (   • Tamdhu Batch Strength v. Highland Par...   ). The Ardmore is a pretty solid, slightly edgy example of the breed (which is, incidentally, another favorite:    • Three IB Ardmores: Ultimate Ardlair 2...   ), but it doesn't seem to like water. But then, neither does the Bowmore, but I don't care because this is still a rare opportunity to try an older, properly presented Bowmore. I absolutely adore bottlings from this era (   • I Love/Hate Bowmore, Part II: Signato...   ) and this is a good one, medicinal maritime peat ringed with tropical fruit. And the Marolo '87? I could indeed tell it apart with some work - there's an outgoing peachy-raisiny character that's just a bit too distinctive - but it did take some work. So I passed, but I still consider the point proven - it genuinely fits in pretty well with this crowd, and IMHO gives up very little on quality.
