Thinking to travel to Colombia in 2024? Top place to visit and top things to do in Colombia. 3 weeks travel to Colombia in March 2019! We travelled Colombia starting from Bogotá-Santa Marta-Barranquilla-Cartagena -San Andres & Medellín and I tried to vlog as much as possible with my Canon G5x and my Samsung Galaxy S9. When we arrived you have to find a small public bus that does a route from Santa Marta to Palomino, this is the bus we would take to El Rio Hostel where we would be staying for a couple nights. The bus is between the intersection of Calle 11 and Carrera 9 next to the market. The bus cost around 9000 COP and takes up to 2 hours. However we would jump off at the stop for El Rio, which you can ask the driver to give you a shout for. You can also take this same bus to get to Tayrona national park which is very handy. Once you get off at the El Rio stop you will see a bunch of moto taxi that will take you down the road towards the hostel as it is deep in the woodlands. I do not remember how much the moto taxi was but if you have a lot of baggage then it is a good option to take. However we just walked, which took us around 20 mins or so. El Rio is a very laid back and relaxing experience and one thing you must remember there is NO INTERNET HERE. So sit back and enjoy your time as you will have to switch off for a couple days. They have a great communal area where everyone sits down to eat breakfast and dinner and they have an amazing little bar where everyone usually gathers (for obvious reasons). They have various activities during the day such as volleyball, table tennis, cards etc and you can always take a dip into the river that is right next to the hostel. If you are there make sure you do tubing as it is a great experience. You get your tube and take a short hike to the start of the river, the hike was around 45 mins to 1 hour and was a nice experience. Once you get there you get in your tubes grab a beer and let the river take you home. There are many rapids that give you a challenging ride and on the way there are a few stops cool stops you take where you can rope swing or see some nature. This was surprisingly better than I thought and is a great way to meet people. El Rio has a number of late night parties with a DJ usually every night but they have huge parties around one a week that loads of people will specifically come back to the hostel for which is great. Also as you may of seen in the video we went to the local town to do some Tejo which is a game involving gunpowder and alcohol and is very interesting you should give it a go. Also there are many high hills and mountains near El Rio and some people would take a morning hike up to watch the sunrise, another recommendation. This hostel is a lovely experience and is a nice cut off from civilisation for a short time I would defiantly recommend it, however remember to leave as there were people at the hostel who we said bye to everyday we was there and we ended up leaving before them lol so be very careful.
