How to deal with Anxiety? - Dr. Sulata Shenoy

Anxiety is affecting a lot of us nowadays. In fact this has been called as age of anxiety. So one feels overly anxious, overwhelmed and unable to cope with the situation. Anxiety is in fact started as a protective defence mechanism which helps you to cope with the perceived threat or danger to yourself. In fact it started as a very healthy way to adapt because when one is anxious one is ready, prepared, alert and feeling capable of feeling the adversary. However in nowadays when more and more people are succumbing to stress and strain the person perceives anxiety even in situations where it is unwanted. Supposing you are experiencing these symptoms you may be under what is called anxiety disorder symptoms. So the first one is you are feeling very anxious, lot of anxiety about situations, feeling you are unable to cope with whatever is going on or you totally go out of control when you are faced with certain situations. Anxiety has two components. The first is the psychological component. I.e. the feelings and thoughts that occur. The second is the physiological or the bodily component i.e. you may stiffen up, you may get irregular heartbeats, go cool, perspire, you may have butterflies in your stomach, you may throw into nausea or frequenting the toilet. So these are all the physiological factors caused by anxiety. If not ask yourself these questions; are you really stressed out, have you taken up lot more work than you are capable of, have you given up on your friends or families, have you become isolated, have you not had time to nurture yourself, take care of your body, your appearance and most importantly your mind, you have given up on your hobbies, as a result your mind is crying for calming or soothing activities. If so take a realistic analysis, see what are the things you really need to get by this day, prioritise, and remember you cannot get through everything that you have on your agenda. Have a healthy balance of work, leisure and social activities, connect with people, eat the right kind of food, do regular exercise, get your required hours of sleep into your day and maintain a calm and positive outlook on life.
