Idaho's fire incident map looks like a pin cushion of wildfire sites blanketing the state in smoke in September 2024. The pall of smoke made the lighting and contrast muted, and added an other-worldly look to the air tankers in the sky as they took off and landed at Boise's Gowen Field on fire missions. Aero-Flite operates Avro RJ85 jet airliners modified to carry up to 3,000 gallons of fire retardant. Aero-Flite touts the RJ85's maneuverability and high rate of climb. The CL-415 turboprop scooper amphibian can carry 1,621 gallons scooped from a lake or other large body of water. It is one of the few purpose-built air tankers. The Coulson 737 Fireliners are the first conversions of Boeing 737 airliners into air tankers. Coulson's 737-300s are said to carry up to 4,000 gallons of retardant. Erickson Aero MD87s like this one undergoing engine work on the ramp at Boise can tank 3,000 gallons of retardant. They cruise at 450 knots, and can land fully loaded.
