What's the best camera for plane spotting? The one you have with you. We were out for some errands in Boise when we spotted an Aeroflite Avro RJ85 converted four-engine jetliner on approach to Gowen Field, its belly bright red from the dye of fire retardant. The RJ85 air tanker conversion features a bulging slipper tank that can carry 3,000 gallons of fire retardant. Our camera was the Sony DSC-HX99 pocket cam, a powerful little device. Its long telephoto reach and ability to shoot 1080P video at 120 frames per second make it useful for this kind of work. Drawbacks? the HX99 cannot use any external microphones, and sometimes it can feel almost too small to hold securely for the job of panning with aircraft. Take a look...
