Equipping caregivers with language & tools when explaining cancer to children

Recorded on 9/17/2024 With Carissa Menard, MS, CCLS Carissa will be explaining what children understand about cancer at each developmental stage and how to break information down to a child's cognitive level of understanding. She will provide caregivers with therapeutic discussion prompts and activities, as well as tips and tricks to tackle difficult conversations. Parents and caregivers will leave this webinar feeling empowered, equipped, and supported when discussing challenging topics, like cancer, with their children. About the presenter: Carissa has been a Certified Child Life Specialist for 8 years, working at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego for the majority of her career before Hearts Connected and currently working Per Diem at a children's hospital in Northern California. Carissa is passionate about supporting and advocating for children and teens throughout life's many difficult challenges and building upon an individual's resilience. Carissa completed her Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Minor in Child Development at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, and earned her Masters of Science in Child Life Specialist from Loma Linda University. Throughout her graduate career, Carissa worked as the Bereavement and Community Educator's assistant, planning and facilitating grief camps for children, and developing grief resources and programming. Carissa has extensive experience supporting patients with pulmonary diseases, traumatic/acquired brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and brain tumors. As the Operations Manager at Hearts Connected, a national provider of virtual child life services, she is passionate about bridging the gap of child life services in the community and increasing a family's access to mental health care.
