Restart City Centre: How we shape the city of Herten with education | Svenja Hövelmann | TEDxMünster

Svenja Hövelmann wants to encourage people to take action in shaping the future of their own cities. As a planner she wittnessed closing mines and cities becoming deserted, which is the reason she is in charge of the „Herten – Neustart Innenstadt“ (Herten – City Restart) project, believing that cities can revive, if experts as well as laymen are included. Education plays a major part in it. Svenja Hövelmann is a city planner and qualified engineer in Herten, which used to be the biggest coal mining site in Europe. Raised on the margin of the Ruhr Area, the biggest industrial region in Germany, she started her professional life by reactivate former coal pits. Today, she is managing the project "Herten Innenstadt" ("Herten City Centre"), which aims to develop abandoned areas and revitalize the city.
