軍歌:暁に祈る (I Pray At Dawn)

Akatsuki ni Inoru ("I Pray At Dawn") was written in 1940 by prolific songwriter Nomura Toshio as an accompanying song to the movie of the same name. It quickly became popular at the time and his since been one of the most well-known Gunka songs overall and is considered iconic. What you will find is my personal translation which I think fits it well and does this beautiful song justice. A lot has happened in the world since my last submission. Maybe a thought for all those affected while listening to do this song would be appropriate. Translation notes: -"Prosperous Asia" - 興亜 or "Koua" was a WW2 slogan, essentially to create a new order in Asia. "Prosperous" is meant in the context as the 大東亜共栄圏. the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere which Japan wanted to set up for the benefit of the Japanese Empire. It is for this reason that in many public renditions of this song, the last verse is left out. -last verse meaning: the singer is literally speaking to its own song and hoping that its message of sacrifice and ideal will resound throughout Japan, and that people spare a thought for the fallen and those still falling As usual, I stress that no political expression is meant, and that this is a historical document that I have tried to recreate.
