Austrått Fort. The only German triple tower canon from WWII, still operational. Last fired in 1953

Austrått fort is a WWII disused coastal artillery fortification constructed by the occupying German forces. It contains a gigantic triple 28 cm turret with supporting systems 5 storeys underground. The fort had an important strategic location at the mouth of the Trondheim fjord. The fort is today a museum. A guided trip, lasting about an hour, takes you underground to view the ammunition storage rooms, hospital, machine rooms, and barracks built to house several hundred soldiers. As a part of the tour you will be able to view an exhibit showing items from the wartime occupation in the local area. The German triple-turret, originally from the battleship Gneisenau was placed into the mountain top by the occupying force between 1942 and 1944. About 70 Yugoslav prisoners of war died during the construction of the fort. About the same number died during escape attempts at the Austrått prison camp. This is the only remaining triple-turret of its kind. The fort consists of close quarter defense, electrical generator, emergency generator, cooling system, heating system, barracks, mess hall, latrine, ammunition storage rooms, other storage rooms as well as corridors. The entrance is protected through a loophole in the steel hatch. The canon is in a good condition. All machine parts are functional, but has been welded due to its current status as a museum. The fort has regular opening hours during the summer season. It is also possible to schedule a tour at other times of the year by contacting Ørland Kultursenter.
