Southern Expansion Project at ANC Update

The Southern Expansion Project and the Defense Access Roads Project are two ongoing initiatives at Arlington National Cemetery intended to increase burial capacity at our nation’s most hallowed grounds. The Southern Expansion Project will add about 80-thousand interment and inurnment spaces, including new columbarium courts. It will also fully integrate the U.S. Air Force Memorial, which will become the centerpiece of this section of the cemetery.  The Defense Access Roads Project will realign Columbia Pike and modify nearby roads, benefitting the public and surrounding community by upgrading pedestrian and cyclist safety by widening the sidewalks and adding bike lanes. Both projects began in September 2021 and are currently underway, with the Defense Access Roads Project projected to be completed in 2025 and the Southern Expansion Project in 2027. These projects will enable the Army to continue its honored tradition of laying to rest our veterans well into the future. It will not only extend the lifespan of the cemetery, but also enhance the visitor experience, allow easier access, and facilitate the cemetery’s maintenance operations.
