Southern Expansion Project at ANC 2024 Update

Arlington National Cemetery Director of Engineering Col. Andrew J. Wiker provides an update on the Southern Expansion project and the Defense Access Road (DAR) project, both of which will increase interment opportunities at our nation’s most hallowed grounds. The Southern Expansion Project will add approximately 80,000 interment and inurnment spaces. It will also fully integrate the U.S. Air Force Memorial. The DAR project will realign Columbia Pike and modify nearby roads, benefitting the public and surrounding community by upgrading pedestrian and cyclist safety by widening sidewalks and adding bike lanes. These projects will enable the Army to continue its honored tradition of laying to rest our veterans well into the future. It will not only extend the lifespan of the cemetery, but also enhance the visitor experience, allow easier access, and facilitate the cemetery’s maintenance operations.
