Meakan (雌阿寒岳) Lake Onneto (オンネトー湖) in the Akan-Mashu National Park, Hokkaido Mt. Me-akan is an active volcano and the tallest mountain in the Akan mountain range in Hokkaido’s first national park, Akan-Mashu National Park. The Akan volcano complex consists of 9 overlapping cones and Meakan has 3 craters at its summit. Standing at 1,499m tall, the mountain is not too challenging to climb, but as it is continuously observed for activity closed to hikers when the volcanic risk is high. The hiking trails reopened in 2009 after the volcano’s last eruption, but local authorities believe it could erupt again in the near future, so hikers must check the current warning level ⚠️ (beyond the 7th mountain station, you can no longer hear eruption warnings 😬) and sign in and out during their visit. Luckily during our Hokkaido hiking trip we were able to climb to the peak safely to see the steam rising from the crater - a must-see sight if you visit northern Japan - and to bring you along for a little guided tour! ____________________________________________________ Who are OshareJapan?
