Ceylon Banknotes from 1885 to 1972 by Dr Kavan Ratnatunga

In 1885 the Government of Ceylon took over the sole authority to issue Banknotes under the signature of two commissioners of Currency, ending the era of notes of Private Banks. A design, standard in many of the British colonies was used till 1939. In 1901 cash coupons were issued for Boer Prisoner of War, their use was limited for use in Diyathalawa and Ragama Camps. In 1941 Pictorial issues were adopted, although essays indicate the change was considered as early as 1928. In 1942 World War introduced emergency notes of fractions of a Rupee. including one that could be torn in two to make a change.  The transition to the Central Bank of Ceylon in 1950 has a number of interesting essays. In 1956 the Sinhala-Only-Act changed the language on the note from English to Sinhala and the Queen was replaced with the armorial ensign of Ceylon. Political figures were introduced in 1961. The name of the Central Bank in English and Tamil returned to Banknotes only in 1969. In 1970 the higher denominations were demonetized in a failed quest to flush out hoarded money. Ceylon became a Republic on 1972 May 22 and changed the English name to Sri Lanka.  The Lecture is based on Dr. Ratnatunga website notes.lakdiva.org, on Ceylon and Sri Lanka BankNotes since 1785. This is the second in a series. The first is posted at IBNS YouTube Channel.
