Cliffe Fort - Visiting a derelict artillery fort (1870-1950)

Cliffe Fort - was constructed between 1861 and 1870. Problems were encountered while the construction was still in progress in 1865. Building on a marshy site next to the river caused the fort to begin subsiding and cracking. The fort's military career ended when it was sold off after the war to the owners of a neighboring aggregates works. Today it lies derelict, overgrown, and heavily flooded. It is not accessible to the public and is in a poor and slowly deteriorating condition. We did not realize how bad the ceilings were. The structure is unstable and may collapse at any time. Only the north part of the fort seems more solid as the structure was reinforced with concrete during World War II.
