WARNING: Do not use this video as a guide! This hike was done off-season in June during dangerous summer heat in southern Arizona - daytime highs of 103*F. Recommended seasons in Saguaro East are Fall, Winter, Spring. Use official park resources for trip planning, not youtubers!! This was a 3 day hike on the far side of the Mica Mountain complex; starting and ending at the Miller Creek Trailhead - a 16 mile dirt road drive from the nearest highway. This road may have impassable water crossings during the wet season; it sucked to drive in dry conditions, lol... When dry it is accessible by 2WD car. I began heading up the 2-track from the trailhead that eventually turns into the Turkey Creek trail. By some luck, a FS trail crew were doing recon for maintenance and offered me a ride in their ATV, shaving half a mile off the first day. From the trailhead, you begin in desert/scrubland and you end up in the pines - about a 4500' climb, ranging around 4300' to 8500'. Not an easy hike by most hikers' standards! On top of Mica mountain, I spent 2 nights at Manning Camp escaping from the oppressive heat of Tucson. Beautiful place. Amazing sunset views of Rincon Peak; hidden gem in the desert covered in pines, with a permanent water source. The second day had me traveling around the Mica Mtn complex summit using the North Slope. This was heavily fire damaged some years ago and it's recovering, but the trail isn't in good shape. That's OK though - it provided a sense of wilderness adventure that you rarely encounter on the groomed trails of a national park. Lots of bushwhacking that day. I follow up on day 3 with the long descent down Heartbreak ridge to the Miller Creek trail - that takes you back to the trailhead. BIG views of Rincon Peak that few ever get to see. Why do I choose to do hikes in the arizona summer heat of June? I backpack in temps over 100F seemingly once or twice per year, and I couldn't tell you why. It's probably a bad idea. Well, two days before this trip I was in the Gila Wilderness. On my first day out there a wildfire went out of control and it was time to abandon the trip. Saguaro was the only other thing around on short notice, so I made lemonade. :) Thanks for watching!
