Supporters holding up photo of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos STORYLINE: The flamboyant former First Lady of the Philippines marked her 75th birthday on Friday with a holy mass, and later distributed sacks of rice to the poor. Dressed in a terno - the Philippines' national costume for women - Marcos was greeted by hundreds of supporters as she arrived at the church in the capital Manila. She stopped to shake their hands as she made her way through the crowd. The widow of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos became a symbol of the extravagance of dictatorship with her enormous shoe collection. During her husband's rule, she dazzled the world with her lavish city beautification projects as her country languished in appalling poverty. Marcos was overthrown and his family fled to Hawaii after a 1986 military-backed "people power" revolt ended his 20-year rule. He died in Honolulu three years later without admitting any wrongdoing. His successor, Corazon Aquino, accused him of stealing billions of dollars and ordered many of his assets to be seized. Mrs. Marcos and her husband's estate have since had to face hundreds of corruption cases.
