MoMA, New York – Everyone Has Their Own Artistic Moment

If there is heaven on earth, it might be found in the moment of watching a child grow with a bright smile. However, such an overwhelming heaven is often paired with great anxiety that must be endured. When my son was just born, I didn’t have the financial means to raise him as I wished. After he grew a bit older, I lacked the time to spend with him. Still, I tried to take him to art galleries and museums whenever I could. Fortunately, there were the Seoul Museum of Art, Northern Seoul (Nowon), and the Buk Seoul Dream Forest Children's Imagination Art Museum (Seongbuk) near our home. It wasn't that a young child could understand a great work of art, nor was it that they could learn something from an experience program. He simply ran around, exploring the unfamiliar exhibitions and curious artworks. Yet, just watching him brought me immense healing. To appreciate art is to engage in an intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic experience that awakens one's sense of existence. In that sense, seeing a child roam among remarkable artworks might be one of the most elevated, dramatic moments for a parent. At MoMA in Manhattan, with nearly a century of history, I stood before Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, was captivated by Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, and lingered for a long time in front of Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory.
