Tails Out!? How to store your reels

In this video we'll talk about tape reel storage and show you how to keep your reel tails out. Storing reel to reel tape tails out prevents something called print through. Print through is when the signal from one layer of tape prints through to the next layer that its touching. This happens when the tape reel has been stored for a long period of time, usually years. You can hear print through when you play an old tape that has been stored incorrectly. During quiet parts of a track or just before a track starts you can hear a faint copy from further in the track coming through in the background. This can be annoying and be a problem if you wanted to remix and master the session at a later date. So to avoid print through we keep tape 'Tails Out' this is basically backwards on the reel so that if any print through occurs it won't be audible as it happen after any quiet parts or after the track has started. So in this video we'll demonstrate how to use a multitrack tape machine to store a tape reel tails out.
