The Otari MX-5050 B-2 HD This film is a first encounters documentary that depicts the user's often clueless grappling with his or her first ever reel to reel. All I can say is watching instructional videos is one thing, having the real macoy sitting there on your coffee table proves to be quite another. The fear involved is a reel thing (pun intended), I was scared shitless simply plugging this thing in let alone loading up the take-up and supply reels for fear of the tape snapping, all kinds of other problems that can and do emerge from machines that are about as old as I am. Luckily I have a friend here who is mechanically minded has had more experience seeing these reel to reels in action and she was able to give me a few pointers. I also had the love and moral support from my beloved cats Fizzgig and Maxine who appear in this film. Im so happy to finally be the owner of this Otari which came all the way from Melbourne. Alexander Francis who was the owner, packaged the Otari extremely well which delighted me upon opening the box. It looks like a character out of The Brave Little Toaster lol but make no mistake, this is the correct way to package and send the Otari because it protects the motors and knobs from being bent due to often careless shipping and handling personel. Oh but the feeling. As I sit here on my bed typing this description I can with all honesty attest to a certain feeling of reaching a milestone in my career. That milestone, big beautiful milestone that weighs about 30 Kilos is sitting right at the foot of my bed and I'm just cutting glances at it and smiling. Equally as exhilarating were the many other packages to be unboxed which are the accessories for the Otari. The original hub adaptors I purchased separately from ebay as well as the five take-up reels and five 10.5 inch - 1/4 inch master tape reels. The MRL tape for calibration and the single BASF reel as well as the Revoxx tape cutters. The Otari is quite a sum of parts and prices for these parts are not for the faint hearted. In spite of this I will personally be buying up every master tape I can find and when I can afford to do so. Tomorrow. Tomorrow I'm going to start it's service. Needs alot done and I have no idea what it looks like in there. Hard to contain my excitement.
