NEMRR Round 5 Formula 2 '24

Saturday's second Novice race -- Formula 2. AIM data got a bit scuffed off the start but it's fixed by Lap 2, just has an extra +1 to the total lap count. Anthony 857 has no idea about it during the race, but from my POV this was the best race I've had yet! We both put up our first 1:23 times -- him on Lap 4 to break away, me on Lap 8 at the end to try and reel him back in. We also both got pretty bad starts. I get pinched in at the wall and he's slow off the start. Nicholas Regis 978 who won the whole race running low 1:22s also got a poor start and ended up having the same idea as me going into Turn 3 on Lap 1, pushing up the inside. Resulted in lots of good passing action early. Anthony 857 makes a clean pass out of Turn 2 at 08:14, and given the speed differential between us at the other rider on the smaller bike, I realize I have to send it up the inside of Turn 3 too otherwise I'm going to lose too much time on the drive up the hill. Lap 7 starts at 9:30 and I can see he's clearly faster than me into 1 and out of 2, but on the entry to Turn 3 I have a shot to block him up the inside. He's pulling from me all the way from 3 to 10, so my overtaking spots are either going to have to be Turn 3 or Turn 12 on the last lap if I can stick with him. But then at 10:05 he goes slightly off track and deploys his special weapon, the gravel trap flares. It doesn't look like much on camera, but I back out slightly and lose three tenths of a second on the entry into Turn 6. Last lap starts at 10:55 and I let him suck me into 1 instead of pulling away. I hold the gas into 3 until I get scared and by the time we're tipping in to Turn three I'm not QUITE close enough to slide inside his line cleanly. His drive beats mine up the hill and then I hug the inside line into 6 because I'm terrified of his gravel trap debris. Into 9 I think he's probably beaten me, but I'm still pushing in case I can stand him up in 12 (safely). We drive out of 10 and I see 2 back markers up ahead in 11 and PRAY that they slow him down. Sadly (for me) they are both too fast and don't impede him whatsoever. He beats me to the line by half a second and takes third place. Good race :)
